Rat River Game Studios was founded by Benjamin Pierce in 2014 with the mission of producing small, bite-sized games for both the Android and iOS ecosystems.

The studio’s first game was Officer Bumble: a running game where you try to apprehend sleezy criminals known as the McBurgler Brothers through a series of 4 difficulty levels. The dynamic AI of the McBurgler Brothers ensures that you never play the same game twice!

Our Guiding Principals

  • Our products should be small enough to have roughly a 6 - 8 month development lifecycle. Any more than that, and we’ve bitten off more than we can chew.
  • Games should be fun! We know we're on the right track when we're spending as much time playing our games as we do develping them.
  • Performance is king. It’s 60 FPS or bust.
  • AI in the gaming industry sucks. We’re extremely focused on writing high quality, tested, AI.
  • We believe in-app purchases ruin games. Either we'll charge an up-front amount for a game, or we'll use non-intrusive advertising.
  • We iterate often! Once a game is released, it’s really only half done. Community feedback is crucial, and bi-weekly updates are the best way to ensure that we’re staying on top of bug fixes, gameplay tweaks, and feature enhancements. Found a bug? Gameplay settings off? Hi, I’m Benjamin Pierce: founder and lead Android and iOS engineer.

By day, I pay the bills as a database architect; by night I toil away searching for the next optimization that will allow me to squeeze out that last one or two frames per second.

I chose Officer Bumble as the studios’ first game because I thought it would be a fairly simple game with a lot of appeal due to the unpredictable nature of the Criminal AI and the reflex-based gameplay. I’ve currently got a list of about 10 games I’d love to develop, all with increasingly complex AI behaviour and some focused heavily on multiplayer (both things I feel are really lacking in the mobile market).

Outside of game programming, I’m also an avid video game history aficionado, a boxing and UFC fanatic (having formerly competed in amateur boxing, albeit briefly), and a lover of the outdoors. My pie-in-the-sky dream would be to own a small cottage by the lake, name it Rat River Game Studio Headquarters, and churn out some of the best AI and multiplayer-heavy, mobile games on the market.
